Food prep, logistics, and healthcare jobs are hot. Legal, and forestry or farming jobs – not so much.

That’s according to a recent report from the Atlanta Regional Commission that compiled labor demand and supply data from Burning Glass and JobsEQ to gauge the growth and demand in metro Atlanta jobs over the next decade.

When it comes to job growth, the report lists food prep/service at the top, followed by transportation/material moving, and healthcare. The “farming, fishing, and forestry” job category is at the bottom of the pack.

The report also highlights which fields will see the most demand. (Demand is made up of three components—job growth, exits, and transfers.) The top projected fields of demand are office/administrative support, food prep/servers, and sales.

according to a new report, healthcare jobs are among the hottest in metro Atlanta in the years to come.

Why These Fields?

The report doesn’t delve into the reasons behind the either demand or growth, but there are trends that shed some light.

Take the growth in transportation/material moving. That’s fed by the growing e-commerce boom. So, if you’re waiting for a package you ordered online to arrive—you’re part of the reason for that trend.

As for the projected growth in the healthcare field, one key factor is metro Atlanta’s aging population, which is growing quickly. By 2030, one in four of us will be 60 or older—and it’s likely that more of us will require care as we age.

What’s Next ATL, produced by the Atlanta Regional Commission, is a community resource that explores how metro Atlanta is growing and changing, and how the region is addressing its most pressing challenges.
