The Atlanta Regional Commission (ARC) is proud to announce the submission of the Age-Friendly Atlanta Region Action Plan to AARP on June 24, 2026. ARC received acknowledgement and a certificate for creating an action plan from the AARP Network of Age-Friendly States and Communities and renewed as a member of this initiative through June 25, 2029.
In June 2024, ARC approved a resolution to join AARP’s Age-Friendly Communities Network, the eleventh region in the state to do so. In July 2024, AARP designated ARC as an Age-Friendly Region. In March 2026, the Advisory Committee on Aging approved the Age-Friendly Atlanta Region Action Plan and the ARC Board adopted the plan in May 2026.
AARP indicates an Age-Friendly Community is “one where a community’s elected leadership has made a commitment to actively work with residents and local advocates to make their town, city, or county an age-friendly place to live through enrollment in the AARP Network of Age-Friendly States and Communities.” The program aims to foster more livable communities for people across the lifespan, supporting places where people can safely access affordable and appropriate housing, transportation, and community service options while engaging in a rich civic and social tapestry. Livable communities include public spaces that benefit everyone. They also provide access to essential businesses, such as grocery stores. People of all ages benefit from the adoption of policies and programs that make neighborhoods walkable, feature transportation options, enable access to key services, provide opportunities to participate in community activities, and support housing that is affordable and adaptable.
