Below, we’re sharing the recording of the Atlanta Regional Commission’s recent webinar “What we know (or think we know) about the economic impacts of COVID-19.” In it, Mike Alexander, director of ARC’s Center for Livable Communities, and Mike Carnathan, senior manager of ARC’s Research and Analytics Group, discuss the interrelationship between the current public health crisis and the economic shockwave that ensued.

Highlights include:

  • Metro Atlanta residents are traveling away from their home about 15 percent less than they were in January 2020
  • The economic fallout of the pandemic wiped out the past five years of job gains
  • Low-income employment has been the hardest hit
  • Businesses owned by people of color and immigrants are shuttering at disproportionately higher rates
  • The pandemic has magnified existing racial disparities in everything from housing security to computer and internet access
