ARC Allocates $235 Million in Federal Funds for Transportation Projects across Metro Atlanta

The Atlanta Regional Commission Board today approved an update to the region’s Transportation Improvement Program (TIP) that allocates $235 million in federal funds for 77 transportation projects across metro Atlanta.

The list includes 35 roadway improvements, 25 bicycle-pedestrian trails, eight transit projects, and nine planning studies. The projects require a local match of at least 20% and were selected through a collaborative solicitation process designed to meet the priorities of local communities and improve mobility in the Atlanta region.

Projects include:

Roads & Highways

• Reconfiguring a ramp at I-20 and Chapel Hill Road in Douglas County to improve safety and reduce congestion
• Upgrading Mountain Industrial Boulevard in DeKalb County to reconfigure left turn lanes, better accommodate freight truck traffic, and add sidewalks
• Implementing “road diets” to improve safety and walkability at two locations: Chamblee-Tucker Road in the City of Tucker, and Donald Lee Hollowell Parkway in the City of Atlanta

Bike-Ped

• Improving 11.5 miles of Tara Boulevard in Clayton County to provide a continuous sidewalk, ramps for people with disabilities, and street and pedestrian lighting.
• Construction of segments on the Atlanta BeltLine’s southside and northeast trails
• Extending Rockdale River Trail in Rockdale County to connect to Johnson Park, provide access nearby commercial areas, and link with the Panola Mountain and Arabia Mountain trail systems
• Expanding the PATH 400 trail along SR 400 north approximately 2.3 miles into Sandy Springs, connecting the Buckhead and Perimeter activity centers with a high-quality, paved pathway for non-motorized transportation

Transit

• Piloting public bus services in Henry County between McDonough and Stockbridge
• Replacing six CobbLinc diesel buses with cleaner-burning natural gas vehicles
• Beginning environmental and design work on a potential bus rapid transit service along Satellite Boulevard in Gwinnett County

“These projects will help local communities across metro Atlanta provide better, safer transportation options for their residents that improve quality of life and spark sustainable economic growth,” said John Orr, ARC’s managing director of Transportation Planning.

Local governments and transportation agencies submitted applications for funding in October 2021. ARC evaluated and prioritized projects based on a combination of performance and cost-effectiveness measures.

The Transportation Improvement Program allocates federal funds for the construction of the highest-priority projects in the Regional Transportation Plan, the long-term transportation vision for the 20-county region. The TIP is typically amended one to two times each year.
