(Atlanta – Feb 15, 2017)

Special Master Ralph Lancaster on Feb. 14 issued a report recommending the Supreme Court deny Florida’s request for “equitable apportionment” of the waters of the Apalachicola-Chattahoochee-Flint river basin.

The following statement is by Katherine Zitsch, manager of the Atlanta Regional Commission’s Natural Resources Division:

“We are pleased with the special master’s decision and his recognition that we ‘have taken significant steps to conserve water in the Atlanta metropolitan region.’ Since 2001, water withdrawals in metro Atlanta have dropped by 10 percent, even as our population has increased by more than 1 million.

A safe, reliable supply of clean water is critical to our economy and quality of life. We are mindful that these precious resources are shared, and we remain committed to good water stewardship.”
