About Harry Johnston
Harry Johnston serves on the ARC Board in his capacity as Chairman of Cherokee County. He is also a member of the Transportation & Air Quality Committee, the Regional Transit Committee, and the Metropolitan North Georgia Water Planning District board.
He served as Cherokee County’s District 1 Commissioner from 2000-2014 and was elected chairman in 2014. He served on the county’s planning commission from 1996-2000, including two years as chairman.
Chairman Johnston serves as chairman of the City of Canton’s Board of Zoning Appeals, and as a member of the city’s Historical Preservation Committee. He is a past president of the Kiwanis Club of Canton and lieutenant governor of the Georgia District of Kiwanis. He has served as the YMCA Chairman & Volunteer of the Year, served as a Cherokee County Library Trustee, and on the board of the Cherokee Chamber of Commerce, Leadership Cherokee, Cherokee Historical Society, and more. He is a long-time active member of the Cherokee Republican party and was a charter member of the Cherokee Teenage Republicans in 1968.
Chairman Johnston is retired from a 42-year career in finance and accounting with Southern Company. He attends Lifelong Baptist Church and serves as a Sunday School teacher, deacon, church Treasurer, and choir member. He and his wife, Rebecca, have two children and two grandchildren.
